Measuring infrasound outdoors with a focus on wind turbines: the benefits of a wind-shielding dome

Abstract Wind-induced microphone noise complicates infrasound measurements considerably. A wind-shielding dome for signal-to-noise ratio improvement of acoustic pressure frequencies was designed and tested. The semi-spherical shape aimed at maximizing the averaging large atmospheric turbulent eddies while keeping structure reasonably compact. insertion loss measured in a semi-anechoic chamber (in absence flow) showed nearly full transparency low frequency range. In an outdoor test, wind turbine simultaneously with uncovered dome-covered low-frequency under different speeds turbulence intensities. Largest improvements were high mean down to 0.5 Hz. allowed clearly identify infrasonic tonal components turbines that otherwise completely covered by wind-induced even speeds. use thus opens possibilities more accurately measuring immissions from e.g. turbines.
